"Sharecropping Survived: Subsistence Farmers in the Twentieth Century" is a comprehensive study that addresses the challenges and strategies of female farmers in U-Mhlanga village in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. By applying a qualitative feminist methodology grounded in postmodern and postcolonial frameworks, the research illuminates the social, political, and economic factors that influence the lives and agriculture of these women. The study demonstrates how historical discrimination and current challenges hinder women's ability to effectively utilize the resources available to them. Despite the adverse circumstances and ongoing poverty that particularly affect women, the respondents express the belief that local agriculture has the potential to support and sustain rural communities. This work provides valuable insights into feminized poverty and the resilience of female farmers in a society marked by inequality.
