This work deals with measurement investigations on an ammonia/water absorption refrigeration machine and its use for solar cooling. For this purpose, the absorption refrigeration machine was thermodynamically analyzed, and an adapted control strategy was developed. Two different designs of expansion valves were examined for regulation. The refrigeration machine can operate over a wide evaporation temperature range due to extensive heat recovery. A system for solar cooling of five office rooms was established. The system has a high degree of novelty, as an ice storage system is used for the storage of cooling energy. The ice storage offers the advantage that room cooling can occur over extended periods even when the absorption refrigeration machine lacks driving power. The entire system is capable of quickly switching between different operating states.
