For decades, research in various scientific fields has focused on the construct of 'social competence'. The results, primarily derived from psychology, education, and economics, reveal not only the complexity of the term but also different perspectives. The viewpoint either addresses the need, a possible deficit, or the discrepancy between the existing and desired levels of social competencies.

Since this topic has not been explicitly examined in maritime contexts, an empirical study will investigate and discuss the relevance of social competencies in shipping. The aim of the study is to determine the extent to which social competencies are required in maritime settings, particularly by leaders, and what opportunities for influence arise from personal leadership styles.

Based on the findings of this study, the author will draw conclusions, outline possible actions, and provide an outlook.
