In sociology, particularly in consumer sociology, it is assumed that positional assignments are increasingly symbolized by consumer goods. This fact has led to the point where our existence today is predominantly defined by the possession of consumer goods; a rise in general consumption tendencies is the result. At the same time, however, the savings rate is also steadily increasing. This contradiction prompted a sociological investigation that examines the saving and spending behavior of different social groups. The present study addresses not only classic questions of saving and investment behavior but also related topics such as the influence of the social environment on spending behavior or the impact of personal expectations and fears on the savings rate.
