Heinrich von Kleist repeatedly dealt with the theme of struggle. He fought against France on the Rhine, he fought for literary recognition, and ultimately he fought with life itself – and lost, when he took his own life at the age of just 34 at the Kleiner Wannsee in 1811. His crime novella "The Duel" is also shaped by this motif: In the late 14th century, a duke is murdered from behind. Evidence and counter-evidence are collected – and suddenly, a previously upstanding woman comes under suspicion. A duel is ultimately supposed to decide guilt and innocence.
