Product details
"The Earth's Lower Mantle" provides a comprehensive overview of the composition and structure of the lower mantle. The book is divided into three main parts. The first part focuses on the study of lower mantle minerals identified as inclusions in diamonds from various regions of the world. Three mineral associations are highlighted: ultramafic, mafic, and carbonatitic, with the carbonatitic association being particularly interesting as it characterizes the conditions of natural diamond formation. The second part analyzes the structure of the lower mantle and reveals its heterogeneous composition, supported by experimental results on phase transitions in lower mantle minerals as well as seismological data. Deep earthquakes indicate numerous seismic boundaries in the lower mantle caused by transitions in mineral structure. The concluding part of the book compares observed data with experimental results and highlights discrepancies that suggest the Earth may have a more complex planetary history than previously thought, examining its predominantly non-chondritic composition.
