It is an unbearably hot summer in Wiltshire County in the southwest of England. In a dried-up riverbed, the body of Lee Geary, who has been missing for years, is found. His disappearance was closely intertwined with three other cases in 2011, when twenty-year-old Holly Gilbert fell from a bridge. Her death was a media magnet; people wanted justice for Holly, they wanted someone to blame. Three suspects were quickly arrested, one of whom was Geary. All three died within a few months after Holly, whose case was ultimately classified as suicide. In the scorching heat, Inspector Matthew Lockyer and Constable Gemma Broad try to keep a cool head and untangle the threads of the cold cases. In the process, they uncover old secrets that many would have preferred to keep hidden.
