Product details

We are one of the last tribes that have been subjected to your civilization. This means that we are one of the last tribes that can describe to you how lightly we once walked through the land. It took us thousands of years to get to know the Amazon rainforest, to understand its paths and secrets, and to learn how to live in and with it. And it took your civilization only a few decades to destroy it.

The story of Nemonte Nenquimo is deeply moving: it is the portrait of a strong and courageous woman, the story of an ancient culture in an impressive landscape, and an emotional appeal against the destruction of our planet – for the indigenous peoples in the rainforest preserve an incredible treasure that we all need to live on this Earth.

Nemonte Nenquimo is born into the Waorani tribe in the Ecuadorian rainforest. From the tribal elders, she learns from a young age everything about life in the forest, the healing power of plants, spiritual forces, and centuries-old stories. At the age of fourteen, she leaves the rainforest for the first time to attend school in the city – but she lives in a constant inner conflict between her tribe's culture and the Christian one taught to her at school. More and more frequently, her ancestors appear to her in her dreams, urging her to reconnect with her own roots – and eventually, Nemonte answers this call. She returns to her tribe's community and from then on fights for her people and against the exploitation of nature.

Due to her commitment, Nemonte Nenquimo is eventually elected president by the indigenous peoples of the Waorani tribe, and in 2019, she achieves a spectacular victory against the oil companies and the Ecuadorian government, protecting over 200,000 hectares of rainforest from destruction.
