The aim of this book is to critically and as objectively as possible examine the German translation of Jorge Amado's novel "Capitães da Areia," which was done by Ludwig Graf von Schönfeldt and bears the title "Herren des Strandes." The first part consists of a brief overview of Brazilian literature, a detailed presentation of Jorge Amado's works and life, as well as a summary of the novel to be analyzed. A linguistic comparison regarding different grammatical phenomena in German and Portuguese, which could lead to difficulties or errors in the translation into German, constitutes the second part of this book. The main section includes theoretical considerations on translation and translation criticism, as well as the analysis of the German translation, highlighting both successful and less successful examples, and contrasting them with proposed alternative translations.
