Runestones, primarily erected in memory of the deceased or fallen, as well as monuments from the Nordic Iron Age (around 500 BC) and the Viking Age, are usually tall, upright stones. The Danish historian Rasmus Nyerup provides a brief overview of the Danish runestones in this volume. He complements his listing with explanations of the inscriptions.
