4,500 - that’s the number of advertising messages our brains have to process every day. In 1970, it was just under 300, which means an increase of 1,500% in just 40 years. However, this figure is still on the lower end of other studies, which suggest that we encounter around 10,000 advertising-related messages daily. Whether it’s product shapes, colors, logos, or brands - all these messages compete for our attention, vying for a place in our minds. Regardless of whether it’s 4,500 or 10,000 messages per day: it’s too many! Under these circumstances, traditional advertising is slowly but surely reaching its limits. More and more money is being spent on fewer and fewer successful campaigns. This is where viral marketing comes into play. It’s about exciting consumers about a product or idea to the extent that they talk about it with others. Then, it’s no longer the company that has to strive for the attention of all its customers, but rather a few individuals who need to be convinced to spread the message, the virus. Viral marketing is a new, rapidly growing marketing strategy that has yet to reach its full potential - but it should not be underestimated and should be planned and integrated across all areas of marketing.
