The more accurately the innovative technology of outdoor heating systems for snow and ice removal can be calculated in terms of energy demand, the more frequently it is used. This work therefore deals with the heat flow behavior of such systems. Initially, a system analysis describes application possibilities, materials, and energy sources. The physical fundamentals are discussed, focusing on the different types of heat transfer. A numerical example provides initial insights into their relationships and raises the question of load case superposition. The US compendium ASHRAE provides a method for this, which the author examines in detail and compares with empirical values. Additionally, a finite element modeling study is conducted, which seems to confirm the lower empirical values while also assessing the effects of the sizing parameters. Finally, five example projects are discussed. The target audience for this work includes decision-makers in road construction, addressing both planners and clients.
