Walter Mittelholzer (1894-1937), an aviation pioneer and one of the co-founders of Swissair, is primarily known as a remarkable aerial photographer. His images of the Swiss Alps, in particular, remain widely recognized to this day. Less well-known are Mittelholzer's flight expeditions abroad, which also showcased his skills as a savvy media entrepreneur. He marketed the photographs from his travels to Spitsbergen, then Persia, and Abyssinia through various channels: in books, films, and the press. Mittelholzer achieved a breakthrough with his Africa flight in 1926/27 in the seaplane "Switzerland" from Zurich to Cape Town. His flights were financially supported by prominent industrialists and bankers of the time, with the declared intention of popularizing aviation in Switzerland. The new volume in the "Bilderwelten" series reexamines Mittelholzer's media productions.
