Product details
"We are in exile/Estamos en Galut" is a captivating novel set on the Greek island of Rhodes during the time between the First and Second World Wars. Amidst a global depression, Christian and Jewish Greeks lived in relative harmony under Italian rule. However, the economic circumstances forced many families to send their sons and husbands away from the island to earn money. This narrative highlights the disintegration of the community, which was ultimately obliterated by the Holocaust. The novel follows a particular family that realizes it must support its oldest sons in America. Through the eyes of the youngest child, the complex relationship between Jews and Christians becomes visible, while the middle children recount the challenges of growing up and the dreams of youth. The grandparents impart valuable lessons about tradition and the painful process of letting go. The epilogue provides insight into the family's fate after the Holocaust, utilizing the Ladino language spoken by the Rhodelisi, as well as traditional expressions.
