'We Are the Explorers' is a qualitative study that examines the language use of Yucatec Maya-speaking immigrants from Mexico in San Francisco, California. The research analyzes how these individuals utilize their three languages – Maya, Spanish, and English – in various social contexts and neighborhoods. Through interviews, participant observations, and case studies of four individuals, the linguistic interactions in public and private spaces are highlighted. The study employs methods of conversation analysis as well as approaches from linguistic anthropology and language socialization to capture the significance and value of the languages. Additionally, quantitative data on language patterns were collected through a survey of 170 adults, developed and conducted by a team of Maya speakers and the author. This comprehensive analysis reveals the substantial linguistic resources of the Yucatecans, who often have only a few years of formal education. The study urges language educators to build upon these resources rather than relying on limited academic foundations.
