The free online encyclopedia is among the most visited websites worldwide. Whether you want to look up the height of the Berlin TV Tower or get an initial overview of topics like quantum physics, Wikipedia is very likely to have what you're looking for. But who writes all the Wikipedia articles? Who are the authors? What drives them? And what significance does Wikipedia hold for the authors? This text takes an ethnological look at the Wikipedians - as the authors call themselves - and presents a small glimpse into the social and cultural practices found within Wikipedia and the community behind it, using case studies. Through qualitative research methods such as participant observation (both online and offline), narrative interviews, and email as well as chat interviews, events within and outside the Wikipedia community were reconstructed and analyzed during a six-month field study. The result is a rich description of the everyday practices and digital lifestyles of Wikipedians.
