Wolfgang Pagel, a son from a good family, has fallen out with his widowed mother and lives off gambling. On the night before his wedding, he loses everything and sets out in inflation-ridden Berlin to search for money. Through a series of detours, he arrives at Gut Neulohe, where he becomes entangled in a whirlpool of familial and political depths. Yet, as the situation at Neulohe spirals further out of control, Wolfgang Pagel begins to find himself again. When he learns that his fiancée Petra has found work and is expecting a child with him, Pagel returns to Berlin. This is a multifaceted social portrait of the Weimar Republic, exploring the anonymity of the individual in a world where everyone acts solely according to their own selfish standards.
