The book "Ximing Monastery" offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary study of the Ximing Monastery (Ximingsi) during the Tang Dynasty in China (618-907). It is presented within the cultural context of medieval Chang'an and the broader network of Buddhism in Asia. As a significant center of Buddhist teaching, the monastery served not only as a national sanctuary actively involved in state protection movements but also attracted a variety of scholars from China, India, Korea, and Japan. Despite its prominence, the monastery has yet to receive a thorough academic treatment. The book sheds light on the monastery's obscure prehistory, its literary representation, and the complex religio-political history, focusing on the interaction between politics and Buddhism. Additionally, it examines the religious space of the monastery in relation to other significant Buddhist sites and highlights the role of its famous library in the cultural exchange between China and Japan.
