A villa suburb in the Negev desert, Israel, January 2009. The narrator, a former university lecturer, is thrown from a rather tranquil life into the reality of war. Overnight. His house is in the firing range of the rockets that are fired day and night from Gaza at Israel's south. Time and again, he and his wife have to seek refuge in the bomb shelter of their house. Then the war suddenly comes to an end. But they know: it was not the last of its kind, and what is called peace is only a ceasefire. The plot of this highly personal novella, with its sharply sketched characters of all ages, from children to grandparents, unfolds in diary-like notes, which touch on the private, political and military contexts like highlights, in their unwanted involvement in the war.
