Product details

The story begins and ends in West Africa. Amadou, Sekou, and Ibrahim spend twelve months in a shared apartment in Hamburg, in Bremen, and in the North German Plain. Amadou behaves like a migratory bird in the avian world. He leaves West Africa to fly north, where he believes there is an abundance of everything and optimal conditions for fulfilling his dreams. And like a migratory bird, he wants to return home once he has 'gathered enough food'; that is, once he has earned a lot of money as a traditional dancer. His friends accompany him on this journey to support him. Along the way, they want to learn as much as possible about the foreign world and earn money for their realizable dreams back home. However, upon arriving in Hamburg, the friends quickly realize that nothing in Germany is as they had imagined. The foreign daily life, the weather whims, and the emancipation of German women challenge them; on top of that, there is a chronic lack of money. Ibrahim and Sekou find jobs, while Amadou stubbornly clings to his unrealistic dreams, is resistant to advice, and makes one mistake after another. This frustrates his friends, who want to protect him from errors. But Amadou is harder to manage than a sack of fleas. A year passes quickly, and the changing seasons painfully remind the dreamers of how much time they have left until an honorable return. Due to the differing personalities of the three friends, three completely different storylines develop according to their natures. Amadou is the charmer, the lively dancer, who easily flips out emotionally, both positively and negatively. Ibrahim is the conservative, hard-working pragmatist, reliable and down-to-earth. Sekou, the empathetic friend, is always the peacemaker among the friends, ready to compromise at any time.
