Product details

After his monograph 'The Meaningful Structure of the Social World,' Schütz drew methodological conclusions from the foundational ideas of a verstehen sociology that would become crucial for the development of qualitative social research. The texts, some of which remained unpublished, are now gathered in Volume IV of the Alfred Schütz collected works. At their starting point, Schütz's methodological reflections critically engaged with the methodological and scientific theoretical assumptions of his teacher Ludwig von Mises, as well as with Max Weber's philosophy of science. From this foundation, he developed his own approaches to a methodology of the social sciences based on understanding in the 1930s, not least in distinction from the logical positivism of the Vienna Circle. These texts subsequently formed the basis of his methodological reflections in exile, which culminated in the early 1940s in his engagement with Talcott Parsons and the concept of rationality, and a decade later found their conclusion in the two major essays 'Common Sense and Scientific Interpretation of Human Action' and 'Concept and Theory Formation in the Social Sciences.' With these works, Schütz laid a cornerstone of the qualitative paradigm in sociology, which remains significant for its further development even today.
