Aalto Collection Vase. Created over 70 years ago in the studio of architect Alvar Aalto under the project title "Leather Pants of an Eskimo Woman," the "Savoy" vases quickly won first prize in a design competition organized by the Karhula-iittala factory. This competition aimed to select pieces that would represent Finland at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. Today, it is hard to imagine the impact the "Savoy" vases once had. When iittala presented the vases at the World Exposition in Paris in 1937, their mysterious shape stood in stark contrast to the accepted, machine-oriented thinking of the time. Each glass vase is still mouth-blown today, with the Finnish brand relying on the skill and expertise of its craftsmen, who meticulously attend to the individual shape of each flower vase. The vase passes through no less than seven hands before it earns the name of its designer. What inspired the creator to the wave-like shape of his vase objects remains elusive, but it perfectly aligns with Alvar Aalto's general statement that "form is a mystery." iittala now releases the ever-timeless flower vase in a special collection edition featuring appealing shades.
