The book, now in its 4th edition, was written to facilitate the implementation of the environmental liability model in practice. The risks are categorized according to risk components and assigned to what the caseworker, corporate client advisor, or broker is familiar with, namely the risk numbers of the business liability insurance. The following have been processed:

• the entire Environmental Liability Act
• the complete list of facilities requiring permits under the Federal Immission Control Act
• significant facilities subject to notification or approval under other environmental regulations (waste law, water law, trade law, etc.)
• facilities as defined by the Water Resources Act (storage facilities and hazardous substances facilities)
• wastewater facilities and the associated impact risks
• risks of recourse for environmental damage

In the seven years since the release of the 3rd edition, environmental liability insurance has further established itself. This period includes the adoption of the EU Environmental Liability Directive and its implementation into German law through the Environmental Damage Act. Not least, the further revision of the structure of the liability tariff by the GDV and the changes in the facility catalog according to the Federal Immission Control Act necessitated an update of the book.

For each tariff item, there are evaluation notes for environmental damage insurance, divided by operational, product, and service risks, normal operations and incidents, additional components, and fault-dependent or fault-independent liability.
