Is this product also only possible with battery operation? Or is there a model without a cable?

Yes, but it only runs in economy mode. Battery change is necessary about every 3 weeks. We have tried pretty much all the fountains as our 'engineer' cat gets them all open and takes them apart. Best fountain with great quality and very quiet, can only recommend; like all Petkit products.
