Is it possible to set it so that it only pulls up wet normally instead of always reversing sideways for a short time? It consumes too much battery that way, and it always scrapes some of the dust off tile joints when reversing.

Yes, this is possible, you can switch from Y-pattern mopping to S-pattern mopping in the Xiaomi Mi Home app. There is also a video about this (note that the sound is annoying and quite loud):
