The Tillandsia is a family of bromeliads that includes more than 400 species. It is currently one of the most popular plants! The name comes from the Swedish botanist Elia Tillands, who disliked water, just like the Tillandsia. The plants originate from the forests, deserts, and mountains of South and Central America. Almost all Tillandsia are epiphytes, meaning they have little to no roots and grow on trees or rocks. Water and nutrients are absorbed from the air through the scales on their leaves, which is why Tillandsia are often referred to as air plants.
