Google Nest Protect
Google Nest Protect
Update April 2023: (2 to 1 stars)
Google has now discontinued both the complete API interface as well as the support via IFTTT - meaning that the thing can still communicate with the Nest app, but integration into a building automation system is no longer possible - this as a modern, networked and not exactly inexpensive device, which is absolutely brilliant in terms of hardware. In other words, Google has simply crushed a competitor.
I have now bought 12 smoke detectors for about 1500 CHF, which are about as useful as a 12 CHF model from the DIY store.... alarm when there is a fire - All other possibilities have been neutered.... Shame on you, google!
Update April 2020: (4 to 2 stars)
Contrary to the original promise to take over the product with no end user impact, the product can now only be read online via the Google account via the cloud. For me, a knock-out criterion when buying was that the sensors can be read out via LAN, which was possible via the Nest account with an API code. Now this still works, but can no longer change anything.
Am otherwise a Google fan, but this action was probably just an elimination of a competitor. I unofficially see the product as end-of-lifetime, strategically by Google. I will be glad to be taught better if Google still makes this possible for the product.
Therefore, leave it alone...
I have now installed 12 of them and am so far thrilled with the device. The device status can also be called up via Node-Red, but unfortunately not any more. Nevertheless, a great product with an absolutely impressive runtime for battery operation, if you think about the Wifi and radio connection, daily tests, motion detection with night light, etc....

Best smoke detector + CO detector on the market. I have 6 of them in use (originally from England, more were then imported from Germany), the oldest two for a good 2 years. Absolutely no problems. The price may seem high at first, but no other smoke detector offers such comfort and the flawless self-diagnosis as the Nest Protect.
Apart from that, there are not very many products that also have a carbon monoxide alarm integrated - such should be installed in every home where stoves and / or oil heaters are in operation.
Nest Protect also offers the warning as a voice output - this is especially in households with children or young people under 14 years much safer than normal piezo alarms, because children and young people up to a certain age are demonstrably poorly awakened by conventional smoke detectors.
Is certainly not a smoke detector for 25 Fr. from the supermarket - but also offers much more, eg the alarm when you are not at home. I can only recommend the things (like all Nest products, by the way).

Perfect protector. Installation and operation are simple and well explained. I like the design very much. Volume very good...can be heard very far. I can recommend it to everyone. The night light function is also good. But I haven't set it for all of them because it sometimes reacts a bit too finely.

Bought, collected and put into operation and installed the same evening :-). Unexpectedly well thought-out operating concept. The things test themselves regularly and independently (and make sure that you are not present). The texts output via the loudspeaker during set-up and in an emergency are simple and easy to understand, so that even children can get to grips with them.
The app is also kept simple and easily supports several users in the same household.
In terms of price, the detectors do not appear to be cheap - but this is quickly put into perspective over a period of use of ten years.
By the way, the base plates of the detectors have been hanging on the ceiling for three weeks with four double-sided adhesive strips each (the ones that can be removed sideways without leaving any traces).

This review was created for a different variant: Protect Set of 3
Bought three devices in 2019 but have only now put the last one into service in 2020. The setup process with multiple devices is more than tedious. If you get a setting wrong, you can start again from ZERO. Pairing Errors without end.
But much worse is the current FORCE to link everything via Google accounts. The privacy is completely in the bucket. If you want to add a family member, you are forced to install the Google HOME app in addition to the NEST app. This paternalism is simply too much of a good thing. I would NOT BUY the product again.

Good alarm, extremely powerful sound that will wake even someone on a different floor. The application is basic but well done. Allows you to check the status and correct operation of the device. Some reviews or comments on forums (reddit) complain about false positives. This has never happened to me in several months. The triggers I've had were legitimate (griddle with meat on the table during meals for several people) etc... The fact that the device warns you that it detects smoke a few moments before it rings means that you can anticipate and mute it in time in this kind of situation. If you have several detectors, you can connect them together so that the alarm sounds in the room when there's a fire elsewhere, saving precious seconds in an emergency.
