Organic waste is simply filled into the composter, with the sides holding everything together. After a while, a mass of organic waste accumulates, and nature takes its course. Fungi and bacteria begin to decompose the waste. Molecules are broken down, and energy is released. Inside the mass, temperatures can reach up to 70 °C. These temperatures kill off pollutants and germs, leaving only nutrients behind. To ensure that all waste undergoes this process, the compost pile needs to be turned after a few months.
