He has reached the semifinals of several ranking events on the Snooker Main Tour and made it to the semifinals of the World Championship in 1995. That same year, Hicks was ranked in the top 20 of the world rankings. Until the 2000s, Hicks was considered a world-class player, but since then, he has fallen significantly in the world rankings. In 2003, he was at risk of dropping out of the top 64 but managed to avoid this by winning 10-9 against Craig Butler in the qualifying rounds for the 2003 World Championships.
