Product details

In common parlance, the term Air Force One (AFO or AF-1) is used for those aircraft specially converted for the President of the United States to serve as a flying command center. Since the 1990s, these have been two converted Boeing 747-200Bs with the US Air Force designation VC-25A. Correctly, however, every USAF aircraft used by the President in office automatically receives this call sign as soon as the President enters it and loses it again when he leaves it. If it is an aircraft or helicopter of another branch of the armed forces or organization, the call sign changes to Marine One, Navy One, Army One, and would also change to Coast Guard One, but this has never been the case so far. If he uses a civilian aircraft, this becomes Executive One.

The Boeing 747-200s currently in use include private quarters for the First Family, work and recreation rooms for other members of the government as well as for security personnel, staff, and members of the press. There are also two kitchens and a medical room with an operating table. On the upper floor are state-of-the-art communication facilities that give the President full access to the military.

The USAF has had plans to replace the current Boeing 747-200s since the beginning of 2009. In addition to the Boeing 747-8I, the Airbus A380 was also being considered. Presumably due to fears at Airbus that a technology transfer to the American aircraft manufacturers could take place, the company decided not to participate in the tender. On 28 January 2015, the USAF decided on the Boeing 747-8 as the basis for the next Air Force One. The first estimated price of around $4 billion for two aircraft was rejected as too high. However, the fixed price of $600 million resulted in a loss-making deal for Boeing and a major delay in the conversion. The first aircraft is currently expected to enter service in 2026 and the second in 2027.
