The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the heaviest single-engine fighter aircraft of World War II and, along with the North American P-51, was also the most produced American fighter plane of that era. Over 15,000 all-metal, mid-wing aircraft were manufactured by the Republic Aviation Company from 1943 until the end of the war. The P-47 was primarily used as a fighter-bomber in the European theater, as its range was too limited for long-range escort missions, but its robustness and air-cooled radial engine made it well-suited for other roles. It was also rarely used in the Pacific theater due to its lack of range. The aircraft successfully completed over half a million missions.
