The BR 03 was a fast passenger steam locomotive of the German Reichsbahn, built similarly to the BR 01, but with a lower axle load of 18 tons. Locomotives of this class were constructed between 1930 and 1938 and were originally approved for a maximum speed of 120 km/h. Later, the top speed was increased to 130 km/h. Compared to other locomotive types, these engines had a lower specific steam consumption and a reduced coal consumption for the same output. The weight reduction was achieved through a lighter bar frame, a smaller boiler, and smaller cylinders. In 1959, the German Federal Railway still operated over 100 of these locomotives, while the German Reichsbahn in East Germany still had 86 units in service.
