As an experiment, the German Reichsbahn in the former GDR initially equipped three units of the Class 110 with a 1,200-horsepower diesel engine in 1972, which proved to be excellent in express train service. The flow transmission was adjusted accordingly, like other components. Between 1981 and 1990, further modifications (about 500 locomotives) were made to 1,200 horsepower (883 kW) at the Raw Stendal using the engines 12 KVD 18/21 AL-4 and AL-5. These locomotives were designated as Class 112.
