The Volkswagen Golf is an iconic vehicle designed and produced by the Wolfsburg automobile manufacturer. It was first introduced in the spring of 1974 and quickly became an extremely successful commercial product. The first series (1974-1983) offered advanced technical features for a very open-minded consumer market of that time, including a water-cooled front engine, front-wheel drive, a solid and robust body with a functional yet appealing design. The high value for money was the key competitive advantage that made the Golf so successful. The sporty version Golf GTI was presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1975, featuring a powerful 110 hp 1.6-liter engine. The following year, series production of the Golf GTI began, and within just two months, it achieved remarkable commercial success in many European and non-European countries.
