Product details

She was an adventurer, natural scientist, researcher, and an extraordinary artist: Maria Sibylla Merian. She first lived in Frankfurt and later in Holland, in Amsterdam. As a woman who repeatedly broke the conventions of her time, she traveled in June 1699—100 years before Alexander von Humboldt—together with her younger daughter to the Dutch colony of Surinam for two years. In the tropical rainforest of South America, she observed and studied the life of butterflies. Maria Sibylla, whose father was the famous engraver Matthäus Merian, was particularly interested in caterpillars, mulberry leaves, moths like the silk moth, and everything that expresses the great transformation of nature, metamorphosis, from a young age. In Surinam, she finally reached the destination of her dreams; here she drew and watercolored extensively, producing numerous sketchbooks. Caterpillar, pupa, butterfly: This mysterious cycle that she captured can also be discovered on the memo cards in this memory game. Languages: German, English.
