It was a two-part spacecraft designed to transport a two-person crew from lunar orbit to the lunar surface and back. The descent stage served as a launch pad for the ascent stage and contained the landing gear, engines, and the fuel needed for landing. Between 1969 and 1972, six such spacecraft successfully landed on the Moon.
