The Winnetou films of the 1960s hold absolute cult status: with Pierre Brice as Winnetou, Lex Barker as Old Shatterhand, and Marie Versini as Winnetou's sister Nscho-tschi, they are an inseparable part of German cinema history. The eleven adaptations based on the books by Karl May were often only loosely based on May's work, but they promised the dream of freedom, a connection to nature, and above all: plenty of adventure!
