While light microscopes open the door to the universe of microbiology, electron microscopes open the door to the universe of materials science. Metals, ceramics, and more—electron microscopes allow users to dive into the micro and nanometer range and discover a whole new world. When examining samples, users may encounter familiar shapes associated with microscopic inorganic worlds of eerie beauty. This book showcases some of the beautiful landscapes the author encountered during her research in materials science, as well as the beauty associated with the microscope hardware itself. The images captured with a scanning electron microscope all reveal a geometry or feature that leads into another universe, while also explaining the artifacts and some of the inner workings of a scanning electron microscope.
