In Namiji, the independent successor to Tokaido, players take on the roles of individuals in ancient Japan who earn their living by fishing in the southern Japanese archipelago. Their goal is to embark on a journey along the Japanese coast that is both profitable and rich in experiences. Thematically, alongside magnificent sea creatures and colorful fish, mystical elements also play a role, such as paper offerings to appease the sea spirits.

In Namiji, there is no fixed order of play. The player whose boat is furthest back on the sea route takes their turn. Only one boat may occupy each space, and moving backward is not allowed. The spaces represent stations along the journey that trigger different immediate effects. Here, players can catch fish and crustaceans, make offerings, or discover spectacular panoramas. The harbor stations, on the other hand, provide time for a refreshing rest before the journey continues.
