The Tiger II, developed in 1943 and unofficially referred to as the King Tiger, was mass-produced at Henschel starting in 1944. The King Tiger outstandingly combined the demands for armor protection and firepower. Its frontal armor, up to 150 mm thick, could not be penetrated by shells from the main guns of opposing tanks. The side armor of the hull was up to 80 mm thick. Despite several massive bombing raids by the Allies on the Henschel factory in Kassel, a total of 492 Tiger IIs, including prototypes and 50 vehicles equipped with Porsche turrets, were delivered to the troops. However, not all of them reached the front units. A large number of Tiger IIs were lost due to drive problems resulting from their high overall weight or simply due to fuel shortages.
