The Bismarck, her sister ship was the Tirpitz, was commissioned in August 1940. She was put into service under the command of Captain at Sea Ernst Lindemann and was at that time the largest and most powerful battleship. She could reach a top speed of 30.1 knots (approximately 56 km/h). Her armament consisted of eight 380 mm twin guns, twelve 150 mm twin guns, 16 105 mm anti-aircraft guns, and 16 37 mm anti-aircraft guns, as well as 12 20 mm anti-aircraft guns.
