Through the thick fog that swirls through the harbor district of Havena, you can’t see more than ten steps ahead. Where exactly are your pursuers? How can you escape? You’ve never been one to adhere strictly to law and order as the priests of Praios expect, but you’ve never been in such deep trouble before. In any case, you can hardly rely on your eyes, and even less on your hearing. Too many sounds echo in the streets—the hissing of a cat, the flapping of a cawing raven—and the footsteps that seem to approach you from all directions at once.
