For a long time, rail travelers had to wait for new vehicles in long-distance transport, but on September 23, 2015, movement finally began with the next generation of IC trains. The double-decker ICs (IC2) from Bombardier received provisional approval from the EBA. These new vehicles are push-pull train compositions, consisting of an electric locomotive of the series 146.5 (TRAXX P160 AC2) and five double-decker cars of the type TWINDEXX 2010. The interior of the cars shines with a modern level of equipment and comfort. The five-part double-decker set offers 465 seats, 70 of which are in first class. A total of 27 trains were put into service, operationally designated as units numbered 2850-2876. They are primarily deployed on IC lines 35 (Norddeich – Emden – Münster – Düsseldorf – Cologne – Koblenz), 55 (Dresden – Leipzig – Hanover – Cologne), and 56 (Leipzig – Magdeburg – Hanover – Norddeich).

Interior lighting and side destination displays can be digitally turned on and off in conjunction with other double-decker intermediate cars via a decoder in the control car. A defined vehicle sequence is required for this. Three-light front signal and two red tail lights that change with the direction of travel, digitally switchable separately. The long-range headlights are also separately digitally switchable.
