Propolis is also known as bee resin or bee glue. It is the resinous secretion collected and processed by worker bees from the flower buds of various deciduous trees. Initially, it serves as a defense mechanism against intruders, heat, cold, and rain, and for sealing the honeycomb and cracks in the beehive. Once in the hive, the brown, sticky mass is mixed with bee saliva, pollen oil, and beeswax and thoroughly chewed by the bees. This results in propolis containing more than 150 ingredients. It is the strongest known natural antibiotic.
