How you should(n't) photograph a mirror

It could be so easy. But why make anything easy if it can be complicated?

I thought it wasn't too difficult to take a picture of a mirror. You take a camera, hold it toward the mirror and press the shutter button. It's done a million times a day. I suppose the mirror is the most photographed object in the world.

But I guess that's exactly where the problem lies: the force of habit strikes back. Apparently, people are so used to displaying mirrors with themselves in the shot that they don't know how to do anything else anymore. In other words: no one manages to take a picture of nothing but a mirror. For example, go to any online sales page for a mirror.

It should be so simple: you don't stand in front of the mirror but next to it and capture the image diagonally. If the mirror is on the floor and facing the ceiling, there really shouldn't be any problems. On Ricardo, most people do it right.

But why should life be so simple? Here are a few pictures of people who don't want to make themselves too obvious when selling their mirrors. It's fascinating how much effort they put in and how creative they become.

It's a little awkward, but hey: they got what they wanted!

Vampires and Spider-Men have a natural advantage, of course.

That could work.

This, on the other hand, does not.

«If I don't see you, you don't see me either» – even as a child that never really worked out, did it?

Haven’t had enough? On Reddit (of course) there's an inexhaustible reservoir of highly mystifying mirror photos.

My interest in IT and writing landed me in tech journalism early on (2000). I want to know how we can use technology without being used. Outside of the office, I’m a keen musician who makes up for lacking talent with excessive enthusiasm.
