I love the smell of freshly washed laundry. What comes afterwards, however, I like less: the moment when I have to de-crease the textiles. To prevent the whole mess from getting even worse, a good iron is a must in every household. And by that I mean good. If only someone had told me that earlier. Because I struggled for years with a bad iron and at some point thought I was incapable. It even went so far that I stopped ironing altogether for a while. Stupid your-top-looks-but-is-wrinkled sayings or not. Until I was allowed to test an ironing system for Galaxus and realised that with the right model, I too could become a smoothing pro. I iron relatively rarely and prefer to do it "on the go". If this is also the case for you and you only have limited storage space at home for an ironing board, I recommend a steam brush, which, depending on the model, hardly takes up any space. My model even fits next to the household rolls in the kitchen cupboard. Although I can't use it for large quantities such as bed linen etc., I do use the steam brush when I'm in a hurry in the morning and need to quickly get a creased top in shape. The appliance is not used to flatten garments, but to steam them vertically. To do this, I hang the blouse or whatever I want to smooth on a coat hanger on a door frame, stretch the fabric with one hand and run the steam brush over it with the other. If I'm travelling and have enough space in my suitcase, I even take the appliance with me.
The cheapest and most popular way to get creases out of your laundry is with a steam iron. Not only do they require little storage space, they also score points with their variable steam output, which removes stubborn creases from the garment as required. The steam chamber is located in the iron itself. Which brings us to the disadvantage: The iron is heavier than other variants. In addition to the appliance, you will need a separate ironing board or a table top. A woollen blanket will also do in a pinch. This way you can iron your clothes on the dining table or desk at any time. Although this method saves space, it is not suitable for large piles of laundry.
In contrast to the iron, the ironing station is much bulkier. The reason? It is nothing more than an iron attached to a steam station with a hose. The steam passes through this connecting hose into the iron, which ejects the steam. The large reservoir means that more pressure is produced when the steam is ejected and even multi-layered textiles can be ironed smooth quickly. Another advantage is that you don't have to refill the large water tank as often as with a conventional iron. You also need an ironing board with "Steam Control" or a steam ironing board for this variant.
In an ironing system, the ironing board is connected to a power socket and not the iron itself, as it is an integral part of the table. You press a button on the ironing board to steam the iron. As the water vapour is constantly at a high level with this system, it is particularly effective. An active ironing board with a suction function also makes it easier to iron out creases. Because this ironing system is particularly powerful and efficient, it is ideal for large piles of laundry. Or if you have two left thumbs like me. One disadvantage: the system takes up a relatively large amount of space when folded, as it is around four times as wide as a conventional ironing board.
