Galaxus and Digitec have launched a new, AI-supported shopping tool designed to help customers navigate its enormous product range. The shop’s 500 individual buying guides dedicated to TVs, laptops, vacuum cleaners and other complex products help users find the right product in just a few clicks.

We’ve all been there. You’re on the hunt for a new TV, laptop or gas barbecue, but the selection of products on offer is too overwhelming. In the end, you’re left unable to differentiate between one gadget and the next. Enter Digitec Galaxus’s new buying guides. Now available for 500 product types, including televisions, laptops, tents, headphones, lawnmowers and face creams, the guides are designed to help customers quickly get to grips with the specifics of a particular product category.

«Our buying guides will help customers massively reduce the time they spend researching a product before making a purchase. They summarise the most important information concisely and make a range of suggestions tailored to the customer’s requirements, making it easier for them to find the right product,» says Patrik Brüggemann, Senior Product Owner on Galaxus’s Team Clippy, which developed the buying guides. While creating the guides, the developers also received advice from experts on the Galaxus Editorial Team.

How our buying guides work

Each buying guide is made up of concise, informative content that’s put together to help shoppers make informed choices. Customers are shown a list of characteristics relevant to their purchase, which vary depending on the product type in question. They can then select the characteristics according to their needs and preferences. Those on the lookout for a gas barbecue, for example, will see characteristics such as size and portability. Guides dedicated to notebooks explain characteristics such as RAM, screen resolution and processors, while buying guides on headphones break down features such as battery life and noise cancellation. Once the customer has grasped the technical specifics of the product they’re looking for, they can select the most appropriate characteristics. After that, they’re presented with a selection of possible products best suited to their needs.

«We’ve developed a solution that gives you lots of freedom in the selection process. This means customers can select as many options as they want, and aren’t bound to a predetermined number of criteria or steps. Even choosing just one option reduces the number of products displayed, making it much easier to find the right one,» says Alex Stürzinger, who’s a UX Designer on Team Clippy. Once the customer has received their product recommendations, they can go straight to the product type page, where all their selected criteria will have been pre-applied as filters. This makes the transition from pre-purchase research to browsing much easier.

Made possible by AI

The information customers need before deciding to buy something varies hugely depending on the product type. Not to mention the fact that this information is constantly evolving as a result of technological advancement, new product functions and trends.

Developer Patrik Brüggemann says, «Generative AI has made it possible for us to use large language models (LLMs) to create buying guides for our extensive product range. AI extracts features, use cases, brands and other information from Galaxus product data to generate tailored advice for customers.»

Where are the buying guides?

Digitec Galaxus’s Clippy and Endeavor software teams will be developing and updating the buying guides on an ongoing basis. To start off with, Galaxus is launching 500 buying guides for more complex product types. If they go down well with customers, even more guides could be created in the future. Buying guides appear in the search results for products such as lawnmowers, notebooks or headphones, and are represented by large question mark icons. Here are some examples:

Lawnmowers
Notebooks
Headphones
Gas barbecues
Face cream

Have you already tried our buying guides? What do you think of them?
