Now available: Evolve3 series headsets from Jabra

Jabra launches two new business headsets without a microphone boom and relies on AI-supported voice processing. What the Evolve3 75 and 85 can do, who they are suitable for and why there are eight variants of each model.

Whether you're sitting in an open-plan office, working from home, on the train or in a café: Background noise disturbs your work. This not only affects your concentration, but also your colleagues in conference calls. A headset that reliably suppresses ambient noise is therefore a good investment for your working life at your desk. This is exactly where Jabra comes in with the new Evolve3 series.

The 75 and 85 models replace the previous Evolve2 variants and bring two technical changes that fundamentally change the device: no more microphone boom and a battery that you can change yourself.

The Evolve3 series is now available in black. A grey version will follow in April. As usual with Jabra, there are special versions for Microsoft Teams as well as general UC (Unified Communications) variants.

The core of the innovation: no boom microphone

The Evolve3 75 and Evolve3 85 models mark a clear departure from the classic headset design. Both completely dispense with a visible microphone boom and discreetly integrate the technology into the earcups.

Jabra's «ClearVoice» technology takes care of voice processing. This is an AI-supported, deep neural network that has been trained with 60 million sentences, according to the manufacturer. The model isolates your voice from the surrounding noise, although the microphone no longer needs to be close to your mouth. Jabra claims a word recognition rate of over 90 per cent.

Both models have a 360° busylight that is visible from all angles and signals that you are currently in a conversation. It can be activated manually and deactivates automatically as soon as the call ends.

Evolve3 75: on-ear, lightweight, compact

The Evolve3 75 is an on-ear headset. The earcups rest on the ears without enclosing them. The headset weighs 180 grammes, which is 17 grammes less than its predecessor, the Evolve2 75, and is also 15 per cent slimmer

According to the manufacturer, the battery life is up to 22 hours of talk time with ANC deactivated, 18 hours with ANC active and Busylight switched on. For music playback, Jabra claims 110 hours without ANC and 45 hours with ANC. The quick-charging function delivers up to ten hours of use in ten minutes.

The 75 supports wireless charging. If you buy one of the versions with a charging station, you simply place the headset on the pad and don't need to connect a cable.

Evolve3 85: over-ear, more isolation, longer battery life

The Evolve3 85 is the over-ear model. The earcups completely enclose your ears, which has two effects: more passive noise isolation and a more intense sound experience. The headset weighs 220 grammes, which is 65 grammes less than its predecessor, the Evolve2 85, and is 35 per cent slimmer.

According to the manufacturer, the battery life is 25 hours of talk time (ANC off) and 21 hours with ANC and Busylight. Music playback lasts 120 hours without ANC and 55 hours with ANC. The quick-charging function delivers up to ten hours of use from ten minutes of charging. Wireless charging is also available. The Evolve3 85 comes with a hard-shell carrying case, which at 41 millimetres deep is significantly more compact than the case of the previous model (65 millimetres).

The 85's ANC adapts to three factors: the ambient volume, the fit of the headset on the head and the conversation situation. Unlike many other headsets, the ANC also remains active during calls and not just during music playback.

Eight variants per model: what you need to consider when buying

Each of the two models is available in eight variants. The differences relate to three dimensions: Certification (Microsoft Teams or UC), USB connection of the dongle (USB-C or USB-A) and whether or not a charging cradle is included. This results in a mathematical grid of eight combinations per model. Which variant is right for you depends on three questions.

Firstly, do you primarily use Microsoft Teams or do you work with another UC platform such as Zoom, Cisco Webex or Google Meet? MS-certified variants have a dedicated Teams button that opens the app and controls the call status at the touch of a button. UC variants are cross-platform compatible without being optimised for one app.

Secondly: Which USB port does your laptop or docking station have? USB-C is the current standard, but USB-A remains common on older devices or docking stations. The dongle is the most reliable form of connection. Bluetooth is also possible, but the dongle offers more stability in office environments with many active connections.

Thirdly: Do you mainly work at a fixed workstation? Then the version with charging station is worthwhile. The headset automatically lands on the pad after every call, so you never have to actively think about charging it. For people who use the headset at different work locations, the version without a charging station is the better choice.
