Now available: G512 X 98 gaming keyboard from Logitech

The G512 X 98 remains close to the classic keyboard format, but offers more scope for configuration. It is particularly interesting if you want to use individual keys differently to the rest.

The «G512 X 98» from Logitech is a wired gaming keyboard with a 98 per cent layout and numeric keypad. Its central feature is interchangeable mechanical and magnetic switches. For certain keys, the software recognises not only that you press them, but also how hard you press them. This can be relevant in games where graduated inputs are useful.

Mechanical and analogue on one board

The «G512 X 98» utilises Logitech's dual-swap concept. You can use mechanical or magnetic switches in 39 designated positions. Nine Gateron KS-20 analogue switches are included.

The magnetic switches work with TMR technology, i.e. Tunnel Magneto Resistance. They detect the keystroke continuously. A normal mechanical button usually only recognises two states: pressed or not pressed. An analogue button can output intermediate states. A light press can trigger walking, for example, while a stronger press can trigger sprinting.

Fine tuning via software

Logitech G Hub can be used to adjust the trigger travel and button behaviour. The trigger travel can be adjusted from 0.1 to 4.0 millimetres. You can also assign two actions to one button. Logitech uses so-called SAPP rings for this. They create a noticeable resistance at a defined point in the key stroke. This point corresponds to the second trigger value of the analogue input.

This can be useful in practice. A button triggers a first action when pressed lightly and a second action when pressed harder. Such assignments can be useful in shooters, racing games or MMOs. However, they require that you set up profiles and that the respective game supports the inputs properly.

Fast query, soberly considered

Logitech specifies a polling rate of 8000 Hertz and an end-to-end latency of 0.125 milliseconds. This is in line with the focus on competitive gaming. However, it does not automatically mean better in-game performance.

A high polling rate can report inputs to the PC more frequently. Nevertheless, your system, your monitor, the respective game and your familiarisation with the keyboard remain decisive.

Compact, but not reduced

According to Logitech, the 98 per cent layout saves space compared to a classic full-size keyboard. The number pad is retained. This is practical if you use the keyboard not only for gaming, but also for spreadsheets, shortcuts or productive work.

The compromise lies in the condensed layout. Some keys are closer together or in slightly different positions.

Equipment and categorisation

The «G512 X 98» is connected via USB-C. It offers Lightsync RGB lighting, two customisable rotary controls and a storage option for accessories on the housing. Accessories such as analogue switches and SAPP rings can be stored there.

The wrist rest is not included as standard. You can buy it separately.
