Pocketbook "Era Lite" e-reader now available

Pocketbook is expanding its product portfolio with the "Era Lite". The device offers an improved screen in a compact size, which should be significantly faster. You have to accept a few compromises in terms of features: "Lite" that is.

With Pocketbook you have the freedom to choose where you buy your e-books. You are not tied to any shop. With the «Era Lite», another model in the 7-inch class has been available for a few weeks now.

Carta 1300: The better display

The centrepiece of the «Era Lite» is the 7-inch E Ink Carta 1300 display with a resolution of 1264 × 1680 pixels and a pixel density of 300 ppi. Compared to the previous generation, which is still in the «Era», the new panel offers 20 per cent more contrast and responds 25 per cent faster. The matte surface is glare-free, so you can read even in direct sunlight.

Brightness and colour temperature can be adjusted thanks to adaptive lighting: warm tones for the evening, cool light for the daytime. If you don't want this, switch off the «Smart Light» and control both manually using sliders.

Open ecosystem and broad format support

The «Era Lite» is not permanently linked to a bookshop. Although the reader displays a shop on its start page, you can synchronise e-books from other stores via the Pocketbook Cloud. You can permanently change the preset shop with the help of the support team.

The device reads 25 file formats without conversion, including EPUB, PDF, MOBI, FB2, DJVU, CBR, CBZ, DOC, DOCX, TXT and HTML.

You can access library collections via the pre-installed Libby app. In Germany and Austria, the Onleihe is also available. For digital rights management, the reader is compatible with Adobe DRM (EPUB, PDF) and LCP DRM (EPUB).

Internally, 16 gigabytes of memory are installed. This is enough for an extensive e-book library. According to the manufacturer, the 1700 mAh battery should last up to a month, which depends heavily on your reading habits.

Audio books and text-to-speech included

You are not limited to reading with the «Era Lite». It supports MP3, OGG and FLAC for audio content. You can connect headphones or speakers via Bluetooth to play audio books or use the text-to-speech function, which converts text files into spoken language. When switching between reading and listening mode, the device remembers the current position. However, the «Lite» does not have a built-in speaker like the «Era».

Differences to the PocketBook Era

The «Era Lite» measures 155 × 134 × 8 millimetres and weighs 204 grammes, noticeably less than the standard Era at 228 grammes. The lack of a loudspeaker is likely to be a contributing factor. The «Lite» lags behind the «Era» in terms of splash protection: it is only certified to IPX4, whereas the «Era» is certified to IPX8, which allows brief immersion.
